What is Equine Assisted Therapy Under NDIS?
Equine-Assisted Therapy, also known as horse-assisted therapy, uses the interaction between horses and people to support emotional, psychological, and physical well-being. We combine these therapeutic interactions with the support provided by the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) to ensure that people with disabilities can access equine-assisted therapy as part of their personalised care plans.
NDIS participants can use their funding to access equine-assisted therapy services, which may help in areas such as:
Emotional Regulation: Working with horses can help individuals manage their emotions more effectively, fostering calmness and reducing anxiety.
Social Skills: Interacting with our horses in a safe, controlled environment can help individuals build social and communication skills, which can then be applied in their everyday lives.
Physical Development: Through activities like grooming and leading horses, participants can improve their physical coordination and strength.
Personal Growth: Equine-assisted therapy can enhance self-awareness, build confidence, and provide a sense of accomplishment as participants learn new skills.

How Equine-Assisted Therapy Works
Initial Consultation: Your journey begins with an initial consultation where we assess your needs and determine how equine-assisted therapy can be integrated into your NDIS plan. This step helps us create a program that aligns with your goals.
Booking and Welcome Pack: After the consultation, you can easily book your sessions through our online system. We’ll provide you with a welcome pack containing all the information you need, including what to expect during your sessions.
Customised Sessions: Each session is tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re working on emotional regulation, physical development, or social skills, our facilitators will guide you through a range of activities designed to support your growth.
Ongoing Support: Throughout your equine-assisted therapy journey, we provide ongoing support to ensure you’re making progress toward your goals. We also work closely with your NDIS support coordinator to ensure your therapy aligns with your NDIS plan.

Some participants may need Equine-Assisted Therapy to be written into their plan specifically, to prove its effectiveness in relation to their disability. When you claim for Equine Assisted Therapy NDIS will expect you to be using that therapy as your primary therapy. This means that you may have to choose between a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a speech pathologist, or an Equine-Assisted therapist.
To ensure you’re able to continue seeing an Equine-Assisted Therapist, there will need to be a demonstrable result, and progress reports will be required. Assessment for whether Equine-Assisted Therapy may continue for a participant will be based on these reports – along with assessments or reports from other Allied health professionals.
-
If you’re an NDIS participant, equine-assisted services may be claimed through several different categories in your NDIS plan depending on your funding and goals. We recommend speaking with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to determine the best fit for your plan. Your support coordinator may require a letter of recommendation from an Allied Health professional explaining why Equine-Assisted Therapy is the best choice for the participant.
